A PROPOSED TOWNSCAPE IMPROVEMENT FRAMEWORK FOR THE HISTORICAL AREASAS AN APPROACH TO SUSTAINABLE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT

Abstract
Townscape expresses the totality of the environmental and spatial composition that interacts within human activity; it reflects the city's characteristics in all its economic, social, environmental and cultural dimensions. Townscape improvement in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is linked to the National Vision 2030 and is an essential indicator of the quality of life. It also has a significant role in shaping the urban identity, promoting local culture, and supporting sustainable tourism development goals for urban areas. Through in-depth literature review and analysis of theoretical frameworks, the research paper raises a question about the nature of the dimensions that contribute to improving the townscape and its role in achieving sustainable tourism development. It became apparent that the historical areas, which are among the essential attributes of tourism development in cities, are subject to continuous urban deterioration and change in the demographic composition that negatively affected the social and economic aspects and led to the loss of historical identity and cultural value. Thus, the research problem emerged from the need to formulate a framework that emphasizes the importance of the townscape improvement of historical areas in achieving sustainable tourism development. The results of the research showed that there is a shared, integrated and interrelated relationship between the components of the townscape and the features of sustainable tourism development, which are represented in four main dimensions, namely the urban dimension, the cultural dimension, the social dimension, and the economic dimension. These dimensions formulate the basic structure to the proposed framework for the townscape improvement of historical areas as an approach to sustainable tourism development. The proposed framework also emphasized the importance of preserving historical and heritage sites, and creatin high-quality urban environments that have cultural significance, achieving economic returns, and supporting the sustainable tourism development process.
يُعبر المشهد الحضري في المدينة عن ُمجمل التکوين البيئي والمکاني الذي يتفاعل ضمن النشاط اإلنساني؛ وهو بمثابة انعکاس لخصائص المدينة بکافة أبعادها االقتصادية، واالجتماعية، والبيئية، والثقافية. ويرتبط تحسين المشهد ويعد مؤشراً هاماً الحضري في المملکة العربية السعودية بتوجهات الرؤية الوطنية 2030 لجودة الحياة، کما أن له دور رئيس في صياغة الهوية العمرانية، وتعزيز الثقافة المحلية، ودعم أهداف التنمية السياحية المستدامة للمناطق إل الحضرية. واستنادا ى المراجعة والتحليل المتعمق لألدبيات واألطر النظرية، تطرح الورقة البحثية تساؤل حول ً ماهية األبعاد التي تساهم في تحسين المشهد الحضري ودورها في تحقيق التنمية السياحية المستدامة. إن المناطق التاريخية تعد من أهم روافد التنمية السياحية في المدن. ومع ذلک، تتعرض هذه المناطق إلى تدهور عمراني مستمر وتغير في الترکيبة الديموغرافية مما أدى إلى فقدان الهوية التاريخية والقيمة الثقافية. تکمن إشکالية البحث في الحاجة إلى صياغة إطار يؤکد على أهمية تحسين المشهد الحضري للمناطق التاريخية في تحقيق التنمية السياحة المستدامة. لقد أظهرت نتائج البحث أن هناک عالقة متبادلة ومتکاملة بين عناصر المشهد الحضري ومقومات التنمية السياحية المستدامة والمتمثلة في أربعة أبعاد رئيسة، وهي البعد العمراني، والبعد الثقافي، والبعد االجتماعي، والبعد االقتصادي. لقد شکلت هذه األبعاد البنية األساسية لصياغة اإلطار المقترح لتحسين المشهد الحضري للمناطق التاريخية کمدخل للتنمية السياحة المستدامة. أکد اإلطار المقترح على أهمية دعم عمليات المحافظة على المواقع التاريخية والتراثية، وخلق بيئات عمرانية ذات جودة عالية تتمتع بالقيمة الثقافية والحضارية وتساهم في تحق يق عوائد اقتصادية تدعم عملية التنمية السياحية المستدامة.
