Abstract

The housing sector is one of the most energy-consuming sectors in Egypt, and hotels are considered part of the housing sector. The number of hotels in Egypt reached around 1171 in 2017, and the number is increasing. The Ministry of Tourism has adopted the idea of updating the system of classification standards for Egyptian hotels in line with the recent state focus on boosting tourism and the environmental legislation pressures that now encompass the hotel industry, It has become essential to direct hotel design in Egypt towards energy efficiency. The study addresses the issue of the lack of adopted strategies for evaluating and designing eco-friendly hotels and the absence of an independent environmental assessment system for evaluating hotels. This is achieved through a comparative analytical study of environmental assessment systems to reach common sustainability standards among the systems under study. Furthermore, a comparative analytical study is conducted on a group of international hotels that adhere to these standards to determine specific and clear evaluation points that can be applied to Egyptian eco-friendly hotels to demonstrate their level and enhance their efficiency
