THE ROLE OF LOCAL ARCHITECTURAL VOCABULARY IN SHAPING THE VISUAL IDENTITY OF CONTEMPORARY ARAB ARCHITECTURE

Abstract

The visual image of contemporary Arab cities, with their architectural formations and models, is exposed to significant challenges imposed by the nature of global Western changes, and their impact has clearly appeared in changing that visual image, as the visual features of local architecture are a product of the environment of the place and the craftsmanship of construction together, If the environment of the place has not changed, the craftsmanship of construction has developed and changed, and all that remains for us in it is the symbolic aspec, and symbolism here is related to form more than function. From this context, the subject of the research paper is represented in studying the role of the characteristics and vocabulary of local architecture in architectural formations, which in turn are among the strongest elements that express the visual identity of a region, as they are the first thing the viewer encounters and imprints in his mind with what they represent of a visual message with meanings stemming from the identity and local values. The research also came to find a visual identity that keeps pace with modern technologies and is compatible with our identity and culture. This research paper relies on the descriptive, analytical, comparative approach through the analytical study of some contemporary architectural models that employed heritage.
