ctrocardiographic (ECG) signals are biomedical signals commonly used to predict cardiovascular disease. When telemedicine-based healthcare systems are needed, ECG recordings must be stored and transmitted. This data is stored in a digital format with a higher number of bits per sample, which requires significant storage space. Therefore, data compression is very important to save storage space and bandwidth. Therefore, we propose a new compression technique based on the structure of the ECG signal. Our proposed technique consists of adaptive delta modulation (ADM) and arithmetic coding (AC). The proposed technique was tested on the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The average compression performance in terms of compression ratio (CR), percent root mean square difference (PRD), quality level and signal-to-noise ratio is 16.5, 2.5, 6.6 and 74.8 dB for 48 data sets for 1 min of data compression.
